West Kowloon Bamboo Theatre returns  
Following a successful debut, the West Kowloon Bamboo Theatre will return to the future site of the Xiqu Centre again in the Year of the Snake to warm Hong Kong people with unforgettable city memories.

Staging from 30 January to 16 February 2013, the three-week West Kowloon Bamboo Theatre will for a second time take place in an 800-seat purpose-built bamboo theatre at the junction of Canton Road and Austin Road (next to Tsim Sha Tsui fire station).  Tickets are on sale starting December 20th, Thursday.

Tickets of Cantonese opera by virtuosi priced at $100 and $150, and tickets of contemporary music concerts at $100 are available at URBTIX outlets, on the Internet (www.urbtix.hk) and by credit card telephone booking (+852 2111 5999). Half-price tickets are available for full-time students, senior citizens, people with disabilities and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients.

Cantonese opera performances by young talents, Chinese dance by the Hong Kong Dance Company, Bamboo Theatre Fair and the exhibition are free-admission programmes.

The West Kowloon Bamboo Theatre 2013 will feature 10 star-studded Cantonese opera performances by a strong cast including  renowned virtuosi Law Kar-ying, Wong Chiu-kwan, Lee Lung, Tse Suet-sum, Ng Chin-fung, Wan Fai-yin, Lung Koon-tin, Nam Fung, Leung Siu-ming and Chan Wing-yi.

While star-studded Cantonese opera shows are the main attractions, elite dancers from the Hong Kong Dance Company will usher in the New Year with Chinese folk dance pieces for audience to savour ethnic and regional flavors. SIU2, a local fusion band, and a cappella Zhong Yue Feng led by Patrick Chiu, will offer two delightful nights of contemporary music in a special bamboo theatre setting.

Budding young artists of the Hong Kong Young Talent Opera Troupe and The Young Academy Cantonese Opera Troupe will also present Cantonese opera education programme and performances to attract new audience of this traditional Chinese art form.

With kiosks selling traditional snacks, handicrafts as well as creative and innovative items designed by local artists and arts students, the Bamboo Theatre Fair will take Hong Kong people down memory lane. Besides, the long-anticipated winning Xiqu Centre design model will also be exhibited at its future home.

Mr Michael Lynch, Chief Executive Officer of the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority (“WKCDA”), said the new West Kowloon Bamboo Theatre came at the perfect time to celebrate the announcement of the selected design of Xiqu Centre last week.

“At the future site of Xiqu Centre, the West Kowloon Bamboo Theatre is back to celebrate the Chinese New Year with artistic charm and inspirations. Most importantly, we will present to you the winning design of the Xiqu Centre, our first arts facility to be completed in 2016,” said Mr Lynch.

Mr Louis Yu, WKCDA’s Executive Director, Performing Arts said the maiden success of the West Kowloon Bamboo Theatre in 2012 had encouraged the Authority to extend the event into a three-week programme and bring in other performing art forms as well as Chinese New Year cultural activities.
