You may probably have more than a career in life so the important thing is to have fun.

That was the key lesson Chief Executive Officer Michael Lynch learnt in his career which he shared with a thousand Master’s Degree graduates at the Chinese University of Hong Kong on December 2nd, 2011.

Mr. Lynch recalled he took a book by Alvin Toffler’s “Future Shock” in his first trip to Asia in the 70s and remembered his advice that we would have many, not just one, careers in life in the changing world, drawing his own experience that he was lucky to have worked in great places and exciting opportunities.

One challenge he posted to students: Who can replace me when I go?

And his proposed solution. “This is really important for you to think about it,” said Mr. Lynch. “We would have hundred of roles for people who are interested in arts and all sort of other areas. I hope the opportunities would help reposition HK into the world.”

For years people said there were not much of a career in arts and many parents preferred their kids to be doctors, dentists, brokers, bankers and lawyers. One advice to parents he pledged:  Allow children to go their way with your guidance and your support.

To the graduates, here are his six advices in 40 words.

1. Have hope
2. Believe in yourself
3. Take every opportunities that is offered to you, even if some are not offered to you
4. Be inspired by doing good and making a difference
5. Find inspiration in the many places that it exists
6. Have fun

“Remember that last one before as you embark the next part of your journey,” that was his most important remark.
