Comments from teachers and students

“It certainly made a deep impression on me! It is very different from what I had imagined the WKCD to be. It has everything for everyone; every student, no matter what subjects they are studying, can find something of interest to them, e.g. environmental protection, organic development, etc. To be honest, I have more confidence after the tour that the WKCD can be a cultural district. Still, I am concerned about the integration of the art museums and heritage museums in the future WKCD. I hope the WKCD can do more in the area of education to enhance students’ knowledge, so that they will become more culturally aware.” Mak Yin Yee, teacher, Chinese University of Hong Kong Federation of Alumni Associations Chan Chun Ha Secondary School

“The West Kowloon Cultural District will be a platform for students to come into contact with the arts. The art museums and heritage museums in Hong Kong tend to be a bit scattered. A world-class facility featuring different arts and cultures in one location will benefit students by broadening their horizons. I would also like the WKCD to embrace traditional art forms like Cantonese Opera, for example. It could organize some training courses to let students who otherwise have little contact with traditional art forms know more about them.” Luk Wing Kam, teacher, Hong Kong Chinese Women’s Club College

“My students and I have a positive outlook about the WKCD. We also support the development of an arts and cultural district in this location. Hong Kong is a world city, but we lack a large performance venue and sizeable museums. It is really a good thing for Hong Kong to develop a world-class and large-scale arts and cultural venue. I hope that the WKCD will provide more opportunities for artists so that young people can be more committed to pursuing the arts with fewer worries.” Wong Kwok Chung, teacher, Lai King Catholic Secondary School

“I really hope that after the West Kowloon Cultural District is here, all Hongkongers will be able to use it and be proud of it. The WKCD’s opening will be a new milestone for Hong Kong, driving our city’s progress, development and economy. I believe that the WKCD will become a venue that meets our needs.” Wong Ching Yim, form 4 student, Shatin Tsung Tsin Secondary School

“I have thoughts about pursuing an arts management course in university. I love music, especially classical music, but I am not really keen on becoming a professional musician. So I hope my future work will be related to arts management, which is what I am interested in.” Lai Ho Yan, form 4 student, Belilios Public School

“I believe that the WKCD will be a major breakthrough for Hong Kong because Hong Kong has always been thought of by many as being cool towards the idea of cultural development. Given the current plans for building the WKCD, Hongkongers will have more space in the future to develop their own works in the different art genres, such as music, drama, visual arts. We may also see positive growth in the area of design.” Chan Yu Yeung, form 3 student, Creative Secondary School
