Performing Arts Committee - Profiles of Co-opted Members

Mr Benny CHIA Chun-heng, BBS

Mr Chia, the founder/director of the Hong Kong Festival Fringe Limited and the Artistic Director of the City Festival, was a member of the Museum Advisory Group of the Consultative Committee on the Core Arts and Cultural Facilities of the WKCD from April 2006 to June 2007. Mr Chia is experienced in performing and visual arts productions as well as the planning and staging of arts festivals. He was a founding member of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and Chairman of the Visual Arts Committee. He has been a member of the Art Form Panel (Festivals) under the Programme and Development Committee of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department since November 2006. Currently, he sits on the Board of the Hong Kong International Film Festival, the HK Arts Administrators' Association and Hong Kong Architecture Centre among others.

Mr Michael MACLEOD

Mr MacLeod is the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. Previous to this, he was General and Artistic Director of Glimmerglass Opera (the summer opera festival in central New York state), Executive Director of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra in Connecticut, Director of the City of London Festival, General Manager of Sir John Eliot Gardiner's Monteverdi Choir, English Baroque Soloists and Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique, Personal Representative of the Amadeus Quartet, Assistant Director of the National Centre for Orchestral Studies (based at the University of London) and General Manager of the Scottish Baroque Ensemble.

Mr Fredric Chun Fai MAO, BBS

Mr Mao launched his acting/directing career with professional theatre companies in the United States. He is one of Hong Kong’s most esteemed theatre masters, and was a member of the Consultative Committee on the Core Arts and Cultural Facilities of the WKCD. He joined the School of Drama of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) as Head of Acting when it opened in 1985. He was the Artistic Director of the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre from 2001 to 2008 and was bestowed the honour of “Director Laureate” upon his departure. Mr Mao has received numerous awards, including five “Best Director” awards from the Hong Kong Drama Awards and “Artist of the Year 1999” from the Hong Kong Artists Guild. He was awarded an Honorary Fellowship by the HKAPA in 2005 and an Honorary University Fellowship by the Hong Kong Baptist University in 2007. Mr Mao currently serves as Convener of the HK-Taiwan Cultural Co-operation Committee, Deputy Chairman of the HKAPA Council, Member of the Arts Development Council and Member of the Hong Kong Arts Festival Programme Committee.

Mr TSAO Sing Yuen, Willy, BBS

Mr Tsao is the Founder and Artistic Director of City Contemporary Dance Company. He was a member of the Consultative Committee on the Core Arts and Cultural Facilities of the WKCD. He is currently an Arts Adviser (Dance) of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. He received the Dancer of the Year Award from the Hong Kong Artists Guild in 1988 and has been an Honorary Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts since 2000.

Dr Liza WANG, SBS

Ms Wang is a prominent figure in Cantonese opera and a famous TV artist in Hong Kong. She is the current Chairlady of the Chinese Artists Association of Hong Kong and a member of the People's Liberation Army Camp Visiting Committee Hong Kong. Ms Wang was a member of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council from January 1996 to December 1997 and a member of the Board of the Hong Kong Dance Company Limited from 2003 to 2005. Ms Wang served on the Advisory Panel on Chinese Opera of the then Urban Council from 1995 to 1998. She also served as an adviser for Performing Arts, Chinese Opera of the then-Regional Council from 1996 to 1998. Ms Wang received the Montblanc de la Culture Arts Patronage Award in 2007, and she was also a fundraising ambassador of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra from 2007 to 2008. Ms Wang has been an Honorary Doctor of Letters of the City University of Hong Kong since 2007 and an Honorary Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts since 2009.

Dr Elvin WONG Chi-chung

Dr Wong is a veteran radio DJ and music critic.  He plays an active role in promoting international and local art & culture through radio and TV programmes, and has been the taste-setter for music lovers in Hong Kong.  Dr Wong currently hosts the radio show Chi-chung's Class on Commercial Radio, and is also the Assistant Director of General Education Unit in The University of Hong Kong, as well as a lecturer of liberal and cultural studies in the Hong Kong Baptist University.  He has curated numerous music- and culture-related exhibitions and festivals, with the latest being the Generation Singer-songwriters Concerts in the 2010 Shanghai World Expo 2010.  Dr Wong is currently a member of the Festivals Panel of Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
